The Beast’s Great Power and Authority

In my previous study: The Beast with Seven Heads, I mentioned John described the main portion of the beast, i.e. its body, as a leopard (Revelation 13:2). The leopard is the third beast of Daniel 7:3-7), and according to nearly every scholar who studies Daniel, this beast represents Greece and Alexander the Great. In the context of Revelation 13:2, this seems to mean the beast would be Grecian or Hellenistic in its character. Moreover, this character is described in Scripture as one who watches its prey (Jeremiah 5:6), and considers them with a view to destroy (Hosea 13:7-8; cf. Luke 6:7; 14:1; Acts 9:23-24). The Beast with Seven Heads

Beast of Revelation 13

As mentioned previously, the seven-headed beast of Revelation 13 has been interpreted by some to be the Roman Empire with its first seven emperors: Julius Caesar, Augustus, Tiberius, Gaius, Claudius, Nero and Vespasian (excluding the three emperors who rose to power for a short time between Nero and Vespasian. It’s not a perfect fit, since three are subjectively eliminated from the interpretation, but this is one of its interpretations. A more widely accepted but also a modern interpretation is that the seven-headed beast represents seven resurrections of the Roman Empire (1-Justinian; 2-Charlemagne; 3-Otto the Great; 4-Charles V; 5-Napoleon; 6-Hitler), with the seventh and final resurrection being yet future.[1] There are other variations of the above, but in essence these are the interpretations of most modern end-time enthusiasts. What can be said of these things? Read the rest of this entry »

The Birth of the Beast of Revelation 13

Many modern scholars interpret the beast of Revelation 13 and its heads as seven resurrections of the Roman Empire. Indeed, other scholars interpret the heads of the beast of this chapter to be the first seven heads of the Roman Empire. Although I do agree with this second interpretation, I do have exceptions as to how that interpretation was played out in history. For example, although the heads of the beast of Revelation 13 are Roman emperors, the beast is not Rome. The description of the beast in this chapter is based upon the four great empires of Daniel 7: Babylon, Persia, Greece and Rome, and Daniel 7:3 states that these empires would be different from one another. Yet, Revelation 13 seems to make the beast with its seven heads a composite of all four.[1] Read the rest of this entry »
