Reward Her Even As She Rewarded You

Babylon - His feet on Mt. Olives

from Google Images

After the elect were safe (Revelation 18:4), the text concludes that the Lord remembered the iniquities of the great harlot (Revelation 18:5-6). It is not that the Lord had forgotten all that Babylon had done, but later he, suddenly, recalled it all. Rather, the sense is that the Lord is unveiled in the Scriptures as though he were handing down his verdict over what Jerusalem had done. Her deeds were remembered in that the Lord was now ready to judge her! Read the rest of this entry »

Jesus’ Ascension and the Holy Spirit

Jesus' AscensionThe text says that Jesus led his disciples as far as Bethany (Luke 24:50), but this location is really on the Mount of Olives. Just as Jerusalem’s suburbs included the Mount of Olives, so Bethany’s suburbs also extended to that mountain (Numbers 35:5; cf. Acts 1:12).[1] From here Jesus promised he would send the ‘promise of the Father’ to them (Luke 24:49; Acts 1:4), and Luke tells us that the ‘promise of the Father’ is the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:4-5). Earlier, Jesus referred to the Holy Spirit as ‘another Comforter’, who would be with and remain with his followers and teach them what they needed to know about Jesus (John 14:16, 26). Peter interpreted ‘the promise of the Father’ to be the phenomenon that occurred to the 120 in the upper room and so affected them on that Pentecost day (Acts 2:33). Read the rest of this entry »

In Like Manner

ParousiaAfter Jesus’ resurrection he was with his disciples for 40 days (Acts 1:3), and on the day of his departure he took them to the Mount of Olives. There he was asked, if he would at that time restore the kingdom to Israel (Acts 1:6). That is, his disciples wanted to know if, now that he had been resurrected, would he restore the Kingdom of God to Israel, namely make it once again a Theocracy, as it had been before the reign of Saul. Jesus replied that it was not for them to know the times (G5550 – meaning the greater period of time) nor the seasons (G2540 – meaning the lesser period of time). In other words, Jesus was saying it was not for them to know the day or the hour, which God had placed under his authority alone (Acts 1:7; cf. Matthew 24:36). Read the rest of this entry »

Where Was Jesus’ Transfiguration

Transfiguration - 1

from Google Images

Some scholars have claimed that Jesus’ Transfiguration occurred on one of the mountains near Caesarea Philippi, Mt. Hermon is a popular suggestion. Still others have suggested it occurred on the top of Mt. Tabor, which is located in lower Galilee, near the Valley of Jezreel. Other locations, having less support, have been put forward including Mt. Sinai. Nevertheless, one would have to say little can be known for certain, about where Jesus’ Transfiguration occurred. It is, therefore, with some degree of trepidation that I propose yet one more mountain that, as far as I know, has never been suggested, although it seems to fit in the context of Jesus’ activity, as we see him ministering in the Scriptures.
