Blowing the Fourth Trumpet

fourth trumpet

from Google Images

When the fourth angel blew his trumpet, a third part of the sun, moon and stars were darkened, so that the heavenly lights didn’t shine for a third part of the day and a third part of the night (Revelation 8:12). By way of being prophetic an event such as this literally occurred during the time Jesus hung on the cross. Many interpret it to be an eclipse, but this would have been impossible during the Passover season. The moon would have been full during the Passover, meaning it was in the opposite end of the sky as the sun. Just about the time the sun was setting in the west, the moon would have been rising in the east, so an eclipse would have been impossible. Read the rest of this entry »

A Great Star Fell from Heaven

Fallen Star

from Google Images

When the third angel sounded its trumpet, a great star fell from heaven (Revelation 8:10), but what does this mean? First of all, a star represents kings, especially the Messiah (Numbers 27:17), but they can also represent leaders of the church (Revelation 1:16, 20), or even the nation of Israel, itself (Revelation 12:1; cf. Genesis 37:9-12). Secondly, if we consider the veil of the Temple, the significance of the star falling from heaven might impact the reader in a very unexpected manner. The Glorified Christ as Judge

Judge

from Google Images

It is assumed in the Bible that folks are right-handed. Anyone whose dominant hand is his left is noted in Scripture (Judges 3:15; 20:16). In Revelation 1:16 John gives us a picture of the Lord’s power in protecting the leaders of his church. In his right hand, Jesus holds seven stars, which are the angels of the seven churches (Revelation 1:20; 2:1, 3:1). However, the word angel (G32) doesn’t necessarily mean a heavenly being. Rather it is often used of human messengers. It was used of John the Baptist (Matthew 11:10; Mark 1:2; Luke 7:27). It was used also of men John had sent to Jesus (Luke 7:24), and it is used of men Jesus had sent out to secure accommodations for his party, while they went on the way to Jerusalem (Luke 9:52). So, the seven stars that Jesus holds in his right hand probably point to the human leadership of the seven churches (cf. Malachi 2:7; Daniel 12:3), and John’s mention of Jesus’ right hand points to his power to protect them (cf. John 10:28). Read the rest of this entry »

The Heavens Being on Fire?

Heavens on Fire

from Google Images

In the ancient Jewish Temple, which was burned up and destroyed in 70 AD, there was a veil that hung between the Holy Place, which was the place where the priests ministered, and the Most Holy Place, which was understood to be the dwelling place of God or the place of his Presence. Josephus describes the Temple, its stones, its room, its furniture etc in his two great histories of the Jews. In his first work, Wars of the Jews, he described the temple that Herod built, and he tells us that the things found in the Temple, the altar of incense, the lampstand, and the table of shewbread, all had mystical or religious significance. Even the veil separating the two holy rooms of the building had a mystical significance—its colors, its embroidery, and its composition, all had a religious meaning. Read the rest of this entry »
