5 – Jesus’ Final Six Months
Jesus’ final six months on earth were very eventful, as, no doubt, were the prior three years of his public ministry. However, Luke stuffs about 11 1/2 chapters into these last few months (recording three of his seven trips to Jerusalem), whereas he scattered 12 1/2 chapters within three whole years of Jesus’ public ministry. If we subtract the first two chapters that concern Jesus’ birth, we would find that we are told more about Jesus in his final 6 months than Luke tells us occurred in Jesus’ first three years of his public ministry. Personally, I find that interesting. Matthew arranged his Gospel narrative according to themes rather than chronology, but it is difficult, at least for me, to understand if an emphasis is made for any one point in Jesus’ ministry. Obviously, all the narratives emphasize the final week of Jesus’ public ministry, but nothing else during Jesus’ first three years seems to be more important that any other as far as I am able to understand.
