4 – The Third Year of Jesus’ Public Ministry

Encountering Jesus - 1

Bible students are quick to inform us that the fourth Gospel records that Jesus celebrated only three Passover seasons, while the Synoptics record only one. Some try to say that the unnamed feast mentioned in John 5:1 is a fourth Passover, but this cannot be proved. Nevertheless, many agree that a fourth Passover, probably occurring between John 2:13 and 6:4, should be assumed. Therefore, based upon this data, scholarly understanding of the length of Jesus’ public ministry varies. Many claim Jesus’ ministry was between two and three years long, while others say Jesus’ public ministry lasted three and one half years. Which is the truth, or is something different true, and can we prove anything from the data we have in the four Gospel narratives?

It is my opinion that a fourth Passover can be found, and, surprisingly it is located in the Synoptics, not John. I’ve already shown where it is implied in my study of Jesus’ second year of his public ministry. During this series of studies and when I come to that point in Jesus’ life, I hope to prove the fourth Passover (really the third) fairly conclusively. Since I have already shown that Jesus ministry probably began six months before his first Passover (during the Jewish Holy Days of the prior 7th month), I therefore, conclude that Jesus ministry lasted for three and one half years. I hope to conclude my study of Luke in a fourth series of studies which will concern Jesus final six months.
